Originally located at Ashdown Corners (a former hamlet at the corner of Nipissing Road and Highway 141), Hekkla United Church was constructed circa 1896. It was one of the early structures of Ashdown Corners and was made of local materials and the labour of the congregation. It was a modest structure that was the heart of the community; however, Ashdown Corners began to decline in 1897 and this building fell to disuse. At the same time, the residents of Hekkla, who had been holding services in their homes, decided that it was time for a formal meeting space, so they purchased the Ashdown Corners church and moved it to its present location in 1899. The property that it was moved to was purchased in 1879 from Jacob and Jouran Einarson and registered to the trustees of the Cardwell congregation in 1899. The church was served by Methodist and Presbyterian ministers until 1915 when the two denominations merged to become the United Church. The Sunday School closed in 1961 and the church followed in 1965 after the decline of Hekkla in the 1950s. One church service is still held here each summer and it is still maintained by the community.
Hekkla United Church is a rectangular wood frame construction with vinyl siding, a medium pitched gable roof, and a red brick corbelled chimney on the east side. The east elevation has a small vinyl-sided addition with a medium pitched gable roof and an entrance offset to the south side. The north elevation has three flat-headed four-over-four windows. The property also contains a cemetery.
